Code of Conduct

When you jump on our waka at Kōrero.Online, we expect the best from you. Please read our code of conduct before you start any classes.

  1. Manaakitanga is hospitality, kindness, generosity, support—the process of showing respect, generosity and care for others. Manaakitanga is a core principle at Kōrero.Online. We like to emphasise the enhancement of mana when we care for people at our kura reo. This means your mana is enhanced by learning te reo Māori and you, in turn, enhance the mana of your kaiako by being respectful and acknowledging the sharing of knowledge together.
  2. Maramatonutanga: A language is always in motion, there is no “end” to any reo, anywhere. Te reo Māori is a taonga, in a legal and cultural sense. This means when you start a class with us, you are dedicated to learning, and our karakia reflects that: it is an affirmation of your reo goals, and an affirmation of your dedication. Each class requires maramatonutanga: a dedication to continuous learning and improvement.
  3. Your karakia is non denominational and is an affirmation of your commitment to te reo Māori, and to the revitalisation of te reo Māori. You cannot opt out of repeating it at the start and finish of each class.
  4. Revision: Learning a new language takes a lot of commitment and constant study. You will often revise, and in that revision you will often be asked “How would you teach X principle/grammar point/kupu to someone who wants to learn it?" This is not only a learning tool for you, but we want you to be able to confidently and correctly pass your knowledge of te reo Māori and te ao Māori on to other people in a manner that reflects manaakitanga: collaboratively, without judgement and without weaponizing your knowledge. There’s a lot in our code of conduct! So don’t forget to...
  5. Have fun! A language is exciting and boring, it is formal and informal, it is precise and vague, happy and sad, quiet and noisy, difficult and but also fun. There is a definite grind to learning any language, so make sure you have a laugh in class and enjoy your time with our kaiako

Our code of conduct is all fire and brimstone, but make sure you make room for love language and laughter as well!

Mauri ora!
