Master your te reo Mihi

This course will teach you all about mihi, so that you understand the context and purpose of the custom.

In Te Ao Māori, an important part of our cultural make up is acknowledging and introducing. We mihi to acknowledge and show appreciation for a kaupapa, an event or a person. We mihi to introduce ourselves, to create links and strengthen whakawhanaungatanga.

Te Reo Mihi is an 10 unit course all about mihi. The course is an introduction to mihi and all its aspects:

  • components of a mihi;
  • how your pepeha fits into your mihi;
  • introducing your ancestors;
  • whakapapa;
  • the language of mihi;
  • creating your own mihi; & finally
  • presenting your mihi.

The whāinga/goals of this course include:

  • Reflect on personal identity and background;
  • Learn basic Māori vocabulary and phrases used in mihi;
  • Construct a personal mihi using learned components;
  • Develop presentation skills through sharing mihi;
  • Explore the cultural significance of mihi; &
  • Reflect on learning and celebrate cultural identity.

Once you have completed this course you will have developed a personalised mihi that you can use and apply anytime you find yourself in the ‘round of introductions’.

It's recommended that you complete the courses on karakia and pepeha before doing the mihi course.
